    Description

    Sringeri is a small spiritual town on the banks of river Tunga.
    According to legends, when Adi Shankaracharya was wandering on the banks of the Tunga River, he saw a cobra spreading its hood to protect a pregnant frog from the harsh sun. This unique behaviour between the natural enemies made Shankaracharya to build a mutt at Sringeri. 
    Today, his Sharda Peetham is the prime attraction of people visiting to Sringeri.

     

    Sringeri is home to a number of historic temples. The prominent ones are - Sri Sharadamba temple, Sri Vidyashankara temple and Parshwanath Jain Temple. Other historic temples located nearby are the Hornadu, Kollur and Kalasa Temples.

    Sri Sharada Peetham

    Sri Sharada Peetham is main attraction of Sringeri. It is the first of the 4 Peethams established by the renowned 8th century philosopher saint Sri Adi Shankara. This Peetham is dedicated to Goddess Sharadamba, the Goddess of learning and wisdom. Initially this temple was built in wood; it was later reconstructed to the current architecture after the destruction from fire.

      Vidyashankara temple

      Vidyashankara temple is a temple with magnificent architecture that is situated inside the Sharada Peetham Complex.
