    Description

    The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat. It is one of the largest salt deserts in the world.
    The marsh covers a huge area of around 10,000 square miles.
    It is often refered as "The White Desert of India".

    The word "Rann" means "desert" in Hindi.

    The word "Kutch" derives its name from katchua or kachbo, meaning a tortoise.

     

    Festivals:
    The Government of Gujarat hosts an annual 3 month long festival during winter called the "Rann Utsav" which attracts tourists from all over the world. The Rann Utsav gives visitors a chance to experience full moon on the salt deserts.
    This year the festival will be from 1st November 2017 to 20th February 2018.

     

    Shopping:
    The unique handicrafts of Kutch, with mirror or bead inlay, with exquisite embroidery are famous around the world.

          Kalo Dungar / Kala Dungar

          Kala Dungar (Black Hill) is the highest point in Kutch. It provides panoramic view of the white marshy land of the desert. It is located very near to the Pakistan border. Atop the hill is a Hindu temple known as Dattatreya that dates back to 400 years old. According to legends and local beliefs when Lord Dattatreya walked on the earth, he stopped at the Black Hills and found a band of starving jackals. He offered them his body to eat and as they ate, his body continually regenerated itself. To mark this phenomenon a temple was built honouring the sacrifice of Lord Dattatreya. And the temple priests even now have been feeding the jackals every day at noon. Tourists usually visit this temple at noon to watch this unique event.

It is also home to over 280 other animals like chinkara, hedgehog, fox, desert cats, jackal, jungle cats, wolf, blue bulls etc. The sanctuary has three entry points – Bajana, Aadeshwar and Jinjhwada.
