    Description

    Puri is a famous Hindu pilgrim city. It is situated on the Bay of Bengal, 60 kilometres from Odisha state's capital - Bhubaneswar.

    Puri is one of the original Char Dham pilgrimage sites for Hindus. (Other 3 sites are - Badrinath, Dwarka and Rameshwaram).

    Puri is famous for its temples and maths. The iconic 12th-century Jagannath Temple is the main attraction of this temple city; other famous temples are Gundicha Ghar Temple, Loknath Temple, Ardhasani Temple. All these temples have their unique identities. 

    Puri is renowned all over the world for its Rath Yatra(chariot festival) which takes place during the month of June-July.

    Puri also has beautiful lakes, rivers and beaches.

    Sri Jagannath Puri Temple

    Shree Jagannath Puri temple is one of the most majestic monuments of Odisha. This 12th century temple is built in the Kalinga style of architecture. The temple tower, with a spire, rises to a height of 58 metres (190 ft), and a flag is unfurled above it, fixed over a wheel (chakra). The temple was built by a famous king of Ganga Dynasty Ananta Varman Chodaganga Deva. The Rath Yatra of the temple attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world. The word Jagannath means Lord of the Universe.

      Jagannath Rath Yatra

      Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the most awaited and much-celebrated festival in Orissa. It is celebrated every year in the month of June or July (during the month of Asadha ie the rainy season of Orissa). It is dedicated to Lord Jagannath i.e. Lord Krishna, his sister Goddess Subhadra and his elder brother Lord Balabhadra. Three richly decorated chariots with divine idols are pulled through the streets of Puri, called Badadanda; and taken over a distance of 3 kms to the Shri Gundicha Temple, allowing the public to have darshan. These chariots are pulled by devotees from all over the world. The huge processions accompanying the chariots play devotional songs with drums, tambourines, trumpets etc, making this quite a loud and vibrant affair. This procession is also referred as Gundicha Yatra.
