    The statue at Murdeshwar, is the second tallest statue of Lord Shiva in the world. 

    This pilgrim site, dotted with pristine beaches is a favourite picnic spot among the folks from Goa, Kerala and Karnataka.

    The famous Murdeshwar temple is surrounded with Arabian Sea on three sides.

    Murudeshwar temple

    Built on a hill, the Murudeshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has two life-sized elephants statues at the main entrance. The Lord Shiva shrine is placed about two feet below ground level and it is believed to be a part of the original Atma Lingam (a divine lingam that gave Hindu gods immortality). There is a Natraj statue made of brass and a Jattiga shrine inside the temple. Only priests are allowed into the inner sanctorum.

      Rajagopuram

      This dome/gopuram is the second tallest gopuram in the world. Hovering over 237 feet, this 21-storey structure gives a fantastic aerial view of the towering Lord Shiva statue. The 18th floor of the gopuram can be accessed via a lift at a nominal cost of INR 10. The top aerial view with the sea forming the background lends an optical illusion that makes the Shiva statue appear even larger. There are many intricately carved figures of gods, goddesses and heavenly beauties.

Many varieties of coral, butterfly fish, trigger fish, parrot fish, eels and shrimps can be seen here. The island has a ruined temple, a Roman Catholic Church and a mosque.                               Apsara Konda Falls is a beautiful waterfall at 20 kms distance from Murudeshwara. The water cascades down from a height of 10 meters into a pond below. The specialty of this pond is that it faces the sea and appears like a lagoon. People say that Angels used to come from heaven and take bath in that pond, hence the name Apsara Konda. The nearby, Apsara Konda Hill contains many small and big caves known as Pandava Caves. People believe that Pandava's had stayed in these caves during their exile.
