    Kovalam means 'grove of coconut trees' and true to its name the village offers an endless sight of coconut trees.

    Kovalam is famous for its beaches. The three famous beaches of Kovalam are Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach. These 3 beaches are separated by rocky outcroppings.

    Kovalam was among the most prominent tourist spots in India during the hippy era. It still has a high status among tourists, who arrive mostly from Europe and Israel.

     

    Shopping in Kovalam is quite an exciting affair with innumerable shacks or shops lined up along the beach sides. Kovalam is famous for statues made of teakwood and rosewood. 

     

    Kovalam is just 90 kms from kanyakumari, the southern most tip of India.

    Lighthouse Beach

    Lighthouse Beach is the largest of the 3 beaches in Kovalam. As the name suggests, the Lighthouse beach has 35 meter tall Lighthouse and is one of the major tourist hotspots in the city. The Lighthouse is placed atop a hillock and can be easily reached by foot. This beach is the most frequented visited beach by tourists.

      Hawah Beach

      Hawah Beach is a beautiful beach; which has an interesting story behind its name. The word Hawah means wind - and the beach had gained it name from topless European women looking to get a perfect tan on the beach. At present, topless bathing is banned here and in all beaches in India. Look out for Edakallu, a famous spot for sunset watching. It is placed right between the Hawah beach and the Lighthouse beach.

          Karamana River

          Karamana River offers breathtaking views of backwaters and greenery. Tourists can enjoy boating on the lake, which is dotted with expansive green patches of tropical plants on its banks. Located on the riverbank is the Thiruvallam Boat Club that offers kayaking, houseboat cruises and canoe rides. Karamana River has two dams, namely the Peppara Dam and the Aruvikkara Dam. There are several bridges across the Karamana River.
