Konark is famous for its Sun Temple, which is now a World Heritage Site.
The Sun temple is built in the form of a chariot of Sun God. This mammoth chariot has 24 wheels of 10 feet diameter and looks to be dragged by 7 horses. This Kalinga style temple is filled with extravagant carvings and beholds divine experience.
Konark is a part of the Golden triangle of Orissa, along with Bhubaneshwar and Puri.
The name Konark is derived from two words: Kona meaning Corner and Arka meaning Sun.
According to the legends, Samba, the king of Jambavati angered Krishna by his deeds, and was thus cursed with leprosy. The king later learnt that he can get rid of the curse by worshipping the Sun God, on the sea coast. Thus, when the found an image of Sun seated on a lotus, he worshipped the God with whole heart and was able to get rid of the curse.
The Annual Dance Festival of Konark is a 5 day long cultural extravaganza which invites unique dancing talent from all over the country. The event is held with the backdrop of the Sun temple, adding to the grandeur and magnificence to the whole program.
