    Description

    Kannur / Cannanore is a small city in Kerala. 
    Kannur is famous for its pristine beaches, Theyyam (its native performing art), and its handloom industry.

    It has a number of tourist attractions including beaches, hills, temples and other monuments.

    This coastal city is home to Indian Naval Academy (INA) which is Asia's largest and the world's third largest naval academy. 

    The place derives its name from two Malayalam words, ‘Kannan’ (Lord Krishna), and ‘Uuru’ (place) - meaning the Land of Lord Krishna.

          Thalassery Fort / Tellichery Fort

          Thalassery Fort was built in 1700 by the British. It is located on a small hill called Tiruvellapadkunnu, at a distance of 30 kms from Kannur. The fort is square structure built of laterite and is distinguished by its massive ventilated walls and strong flanking bastions. It has Secret Tunnels and various prison cells. The famous St. John's Anglican church / English Church is behind this fort.

            Dharmadam Island

            This island, covered with coconut palms and dense bush is a beautiful sight. The island is surrounded by the Anjarakandy river on three sides and by the Arabian sea on the fourth side. It is formed as a result of lateritic rock projection between two arms of Anjarakkandy River and the sea. During low tide the ocean recedes making it possible for visitors to walk to the island. (Make sure to return before the tides get stronger). Alternatively, you can take a boat from south end of nearby Moidu Bridge located along Kannur - Thalasseri highway and reach Dharmadam Island. It lies close to Muzhappilangad Drive in beach.
