    Description

    Jowai is a picturesque town, situated alongside the Myntdu river.

    It is at a distance of 66 kms from Shillong and 26 kms from Nartiang.

    The mountainous range of the Jaintia Hills is well known as a natural paradise, with its rugged terrain of deep gorges, narrow valleys and cascading waterfalls - this place is filled with scenic beauty, peace and tranquility. It is a scenic place located on a plateau surrounded on three sides by the Myntdu river; the Indo-Bangladesh border is about 50 km from here. 

     

    Jowai has many attraction; the highlight is Jarain Pitcher plant lake which has many pitcher plants, which are the unique carnivorous plants.

     

    In the vicinity of Jowai there are numerous thrilling caves & caverns used as hideouts during war time between Jaintia Kings and foreign intruders. The villages of Amlarem, Pdengshakap, Syndai and Nongtalang are dotted with such caves and caverns.

            Umlawan is at a distance of 47 kms from Jowai. Umlawan Caves are the deepest and largest caves of the sub-continent. The caves are 100 m deep and 21km long.
