    Gangtok the capital of Sikkim, is located in the eastern Himalayan range at an elevation of 5,410 ft.

    Gangtok enjoys a year-round mild temperate climate and is a prime centre of Sikkim's tourism industry.
    The view of Khangchendzonga from Gangtok is awe-inspiring. 

     

    Gangtok means hill top, and it is considered as one of the most beautiful hill stations in the country. 

     

    Gangtok gained popularity after the construction of Enchey Monastery in the year 1840. It is a popular pilgrimage for followers of Buddhism.

    Rumtek monastery

    The Rumtek monastery is Sikkim’as largest monastery and of the greatest monasteries in India. It is situated about 23 km from Gangtok and is located at an elevation of around 5000 ft with lush green landscapes all around it. The Rumtek Monastery appears very serene in the beautiful background of majestic hills and beautiful waterfalls. This place includes a beautiful shrine temple and a monastery for the monks and is very popular among the Tibetan Buddhists. The monastery features a golden stupa containing the relics of the 16th Karmapa, with several other sacred Buddhist artefacts.

      Tsomgo Lake / Changu Lake

      The glacial Tsomgo Lake is located at an altitude of 3,780 meters above sea level. This lake is frozen in winters and is crossed by the Nathu la Pass on the north. The Chinese border is pretty close to this lake with a small distance of only 5 kilometers, but is however 18 kilometers by road. There is also a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva here. Rugged winding mountain roads take you to this amazing lake which changes color with the changing season. It is said that in the past, Buddhist monks studied the changing colors of the lake and predicted the future. Tsomgo Lake is at a distance of 40 kms from Gangtok.

The lake is considered a sacred spot for Buddhist and Sikhs. It is believed that this lake was blessed by the Buddhist Guru Padmasambava who is renowned as Guru Rinpoche, the revered founder of Tibetan Buddhism. The story goes that he touched the frozen lake at a point to make sure the villagers receive drinking water through that portion. It is said that the portion he touched does not freeze till date no matter how much the temperature falls. Another legend goes that the lake was blessed by the Sikh Guru Nanak on his visit to Sikkim. There are several beliefs surrounding the Gurudongmar lake. One such belief is that the lake grants wishes to pregnant women who pay it a visit. Sarva Dharma Stala is a prayer spot near the lake which has become a major attraction for people of all religions.
