    Darjeeling is a city in West Bengal, which is located in the Lesser Himalaya at an elevation of 6,700 ft. 
    Darjeeling is mainly famous for 3 things for its tea industry, the spectacular views of Kangchenjunga, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

    This beautiful hill station has vast expanses of tea estates and high Tibetan influence in their cuisine, culture and craft.
     
    The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a 600 mm (2 ft) narrow-gauge railway that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This toy train was established back in 1881, still runs in this part.

    Some of Darjeeling's most popular tourist attractions include monasteries, botanical gardens, zoo, and the Darjeeling-Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway cable car which happens to be the longest Asian cable car. 


    The name Darjeeling comes from the Tibetan word dorje, meaning the thunderbolt sceptre of the Hindu deity Indra, and ling, a place or land.

    Tiger Hill

    Situated at an altitude of 2590 meters (8482 ft.), this spot has earned international fame for the magnificent view of the sunrise over the "Kanchanjunga". Even Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, is visible from here. Located 13 kms from the town; the Tiger Hills make for a perfect sunrise viewing point. The first shot of sunlight at dawn makes the tip of the snow clad mountain in pale orange, a sight not worth missing. The summit of Ghoom is the highest point of Tiger hill.

      Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) / Toy Train

      One of the most famous attraction in Darjeeling, is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. It is a narrow gauge rail that is 2ft in width and runs between Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri and was built in the years between 1881. It is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, making it the second railway in the world to have such an honor after Semmering Railway, Austria. It's a two-hour round journey from Darjeeling up to Ghum and then back covering about 14 km of distance. While on your ride, you will also get to see the War Memorial built in honor of the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives. The epic ride on DHR Toy Train offers some unparalleled views of Darjeeling town and the snow clad peaks of Kanchenjunga. The train passes through many loops, the prominent one being the Batasia Loop, where the toy train makes a 360 degree turn.

        Batasia Loop is a interesting spiral railway with the train tracks overlapping and encircling themselves. It is a gigantic railway loop where the Toy Train makes a 360 Degree turn. It was basically built to make it possible for the Toy Train to cut the deep ascend. It was created in 1919, the track here wraps around over itself through a tunnel and over a hilltop. Batasia Loop offers a panoramic view of the Kanchanjunga Range. You can reach this place by car also and watch the panaromic view of Darjeeling town. This place also houses a Gorkha war memorial.

                        Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre in Darjeeling, is a rehabilitation Centre for the Tibetan refugees. It was established on 1 October 1959, after they followed Dalai Lama and escaped from Tibet. The production of Tibetan handicraft is the centre's main activity. Visitors are welcome to wander through the craft workshops that produce carpets, woodcarvings and woollen items. The handicrafts are for sale in the showrooms here.                                                     The nearest railway station in Darjeeling is at New Jalpaiguri (62 kilometres from the main town) which connects major Indian cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar and Cochin. The DHR Toy Train service starts at New Jalpaiguri and will get you to Darjeeling at a speed no faster than 30 miles per hour. It takes 7 hours and halts at Batasia Loop from where passengers can take photographic shots of Mt. Kanchenjunga.
