    Dambulla is known for the largest and best preserved cave temple complex of Sri Lanka.

     

    The Golden Rock is a cave temple which dates back to the 1st Century BC. It is a World Heritage Site. This cave temple which dates back to the 1st Century BC. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and statues of gods and goddesses including Vishnu and Ganesha.

     

    Apart from the Golden Rock temple, Dambulla is also from where one can visit the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

          It is said to be one of the dramatic sight of Sri Lanka. It is located 17 kms from Dambulla. You will need to climb the staircase to reach on the top of the site. On the way you will find colonial lion’s paws carved into the bedrock. And you will also find number of gardens and cave shrines which are added part of Sigiriya. It is one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating UNESCO world heritage sites. No matter how often you climb to the summit of this one-time hilltop fortress of the maverick Sinhalese king, Kassapa, the pleasure barely diminishes because of the abandon spectacular views at the summit.
