    Description

    Chitrakoot is a small town situated in the north Vindhyan range. The town lies in the historical Chitrakoot region, which is divided between the present-day Indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

    Legends have it that Chitrakoot was the place where Lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana stayed for eleven and half of their fourteen years of exile.

     

    Chitrakoot mountain range has numerous places of great religious importance like Bharat Milap Temple, Hanuman Dhara, Janki Kund and many more. This divine city is also known as the 'Hill of many wonders'.

     

    This scenic town is a perfect blend of divinity, serenity, and exquisite beauty. 

     

    Chitrakoot Parvat Mala includes famous religious mountains such as Kamad Giri, Hanumaan Dhara, Janki Kund, Lakshman pahari, and Devangana.

    Ramghat

    Ramghat is a main ghat in Chitrakoot. The ghats that line the Mandakini river are called Ramghat. This ghat is center of ritual activity and the 'aarti' performed in the evening is particularly beautiful. It has boating facility. Legend has it, that during the exile period Rama, Lakshmana and Sita took bath here and are believed to have appeared before the poet Tulsidas.

      Kamadgiri

      Kamadgiri is a lush green hillock of prime religious significance. Devotees flock the place for Kamadgiri Parikrama (circumambulation). This is around 5 km parikrama and can be completed in approx 2 hours. This place is 1.5 km far from Ramghat. This forested hill, has chain of temples along its base. The place derives its name from Kamadnathji (another name of Lord Rama) and it means fulfiller of all wishes.

        Bharat Milap temple

        Bharat Milap temple near Ramghat ghat; is said to be on the spot where Bharata met his brother Rama to persuade him to return to the throne of Ayodhya. It is said that the meeting of four brother was so emotional that even the rocks and mountains of Chitrakut melted. Foot prints of Lord Rama and his brothers were imprinted on these rocks and are still present today and seen in Bharat Milap Mandir. Bharat milap mandir is situated beside kamadgiri mountain, in the circumbulation path of kamadgiri.

          Hanuman Dhara

          Hanuman Dhara is a hill where there are 3 main spots. Trimukhi Hanuman mandir, Panchmukhi hanuman mandir (Main) and Seeta Rasoi at the top. One has to climb uphill to reach Hanuman Dhara. The prime attraction is hanuman idol, where continuous stream of water falls on hanuman idol and the source of water is not known. This place is around 3 km away from Ramghat.

            Sphatik Shila

            Sphatik Shila is a picturesque spot marked by two immense rocks. It is believed that Lord Ram used to rest on this stone. This place is around 4 km from Ramghat. Devotees visit this place, as it is believed that the place has been blessed by Lord Rama and his wife Sita. The boulder is said to bears the footprints of Rama and Sita. According to Ramacharit Manas, it is said that Lord Rama with Lakshman was sitting on this shila (rock) when Hanuman returned from Lanka after setting it afire and confirmed the news to Lord Rama that Sita has been imprisoned in Ashoka vatika at Lanka.

                Raghav Prayag Ghat

                Raghav Prayag Ghat is located towards the south of the Ramghat, it is built on the convergence point of the three rivers namely the Payaswini, the Mandakini and the Gayatri. Here Lord Ram performed the pitra tarpan ceremony. Devotees come every year to absolve themselves of all the sins by taking a holy dip here.

                    Sati Anasuya ashrama is located 16 km from the town. This ashram is set amidst thick forests. It was here that Atri muni, his wife Anasuya and their three sons lived and meditated. As per description of Valmiki at one time there was no rain in Chitrakuta for ten years; causing severe famine. Sati Anasuya performed hard and intensive austerities and got the river Mandakini down on earth. People visit this ashram, for peace and serenity.
