    Description

    Badami famous for its rock cut structural temples; is a historical town in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka state. It was formerly known as Vatapi, and was very famous during the Chalukyas regime from 540 to 757 AD. 

    It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake. 

    Landmarks in Badami include cave temples, gateways, forts, inscriptions and sculptures.

    It is a popular tourist spot in north Karnataka, and forms a favorite historical circuit (Hampi - Badami - Aihole - Pattadakal) with its neighbouring cities.

    Badami Cave Temples

    Badami Cave Temples are prime attraction of the place. The temples were created by the Badami Chalukyas in the 6th and the 7th centuries. Badami cave temples were carved from a massive sandstone cliff; and it is delightful sight to see these beautiful temples located between a ravines surrounded by huge cliffs.

      Cave temple 1 may be the oldest in Badami. It is made of red sandstone and has a hall with numerous pillars and a square shaped sanctum hollowed in the control back wall. There are paintings of amorous couples on the ceiling. Other features include Shiva and his wife Parvathi with a coiled serpent and the 18 armed lord Nataraja in 81 dancing poses.

          Cave temple 3 dates back to 578 AD. The façade of the cave is nearly 70 feet wide, with carvings of ganas on the plinth. The third cave is dedicated to Vishnu, and is the best and the biggest, and it has splendid giant figures of Paravasudeva, Bhuvaraha, Harihara and Narasimha. All these statues are engraved in a vigorous style.
