    Description

    The beautiful city of Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains. It has India's first hill fort, Taragarh.

    Ajmer got its name from name from 'Ajay Meru' or the invincible hill. It is a popular pilgrimage center for the Muslims as well as the Hindus. 
    Muslims from all over the world visit the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the domed shrine of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti.
    Ajmer is also the base for Hindu devotees visiting Pushkar which is about 14 kms. away. 

    Ajmer also has a 16th-century palace built by the Mughal emperor Akbar; which now houses the Ajmer Government Museum, displaying armor and stone sculptures.

    Ajmer Sharif Dargah / Dargah Sharif

    The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is a shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti which is situated at the foot of the Taragarh hill, and consists of several white marble buildings arranged around two courtyards. Akbar and his queen used to come here by foot every year on pilgrimage from Agra in observance of a vow when he prayed for a son. The large pillars called "Kose ('Mile') Minars", erected at intervals of two miles (3 km) along the entire way between Agra and Ajmer from the time of their visit.

      Taragarh Fort

      Taragarh Fort or 'Star Fort' is the most impressive of structures of city of Ajmer. It was constructed in 1354 upon a steep hillside. Taragarh Fort is claimed to be the first hill fort in Asia, and is very impressive with its solid rectangular shape and rock-strong 4.5 metre walls. Taragarh Fort was renowned for its tunnels crisscrossing the entire hillside. However, these tunnels are now inaccessible due to lack of proper maps.

        Anasagar Lake

        The scenic lake is adjoined by beautiful Daulat Bagh. It is spread over 13 Kms. You can enjoy boat rides; or stroll on the island in between the lake. Legend states that - When the Muslim saint Moinuddin Chishti arrived in Ajmer, he and his followers were banned from using water from Ana Sagar. He requested to get a cup of water that was granted. When the cup was filled the water of the lake got dried up miraculously. People requested to return the water, the saint gracefully did so. Since then Moinuddin Chishti got multitude of followers.
