Tawang is one of the most beautiful places in Arunachal Pradesh. It is located at a height of 10,000 ft above sea level.
This beautiful place is home to the Monpa tribe and houses one of the oldest and largest Buddhist monasteries in India - Tawang Monastery
In 1962, Tawang was conquered by the Chinese troops, who destroyed some portions of the monastery. For six months, the entire district was under the control of Chinese nationalist troops. However, after a retreat, it went under the control of India.
Tawang shares its border with Tibet in the north and with Bhutan in the south-west.
Owing to beautiful mountains and monasteries along with 100 lakes, today Tawang is one of the most sought out tourist destinations in Arunachal Pradesh.
You need a permit/pass to enter Tawang. The pass can be bought from Kolkata, New Delhi, Guwahati or Tezpur.
The Sela pass connects Tawang to Guwahati.

Tawang Monastery

Tawang Monastery is one of the oldest and largest Buddhist monasteries in India. It is the second oldest monastery in the world after Lhasa. This 400 years old monastery is home to more than 700 monks. 'Ta' means Horse and 'Wang' means Chosen. It is believed that the site on which the monastery has been constructed was chosen by the horse, which was owned by Merag Lama Lodre Gyamtso. According a legend, Merag Lama was unable to decide a location to establish the monastery. In order to seek divine guidance for choosing the construction site for the monastery, he was praying inside a cave. When he came out after finishing prayers, he found that his horse was missing. On searching, he saw that horse was standing on a hilltop. On seeing his horse on the hilltop, he considered this as a sign of divine blessing and finalised that location for construction of the monastery. Tawang Monastery is also popularly known as Galden Namgey Lhatse, which means celestial paradise.

It is around 2 kms away from the town of Jang on the road connecting Tawang and Bomdila, so it is also known as the Jang Falls. At the falls you can visit the Hydel plant which generates electricity for the nearby areas from the force of the waterfalls. The road to reach Zemithang is in bad condition, but the natural beauties of the place would keep you spell bounded. Zemithang is a ideal place for a full day trip from Tawang. The Gorsam Chorten / stupa at Zemithang is one of the main attraction of the place. The stupa is almost 100 feet tall, and reportedly, it took more than a decade to be built. The folklore is that Lama Sangye Pradhar built this huge stupa to ward off evil spirits from the region. Zemithang is not a typical tourist destination; but this remote quite location is worth a visit, which consits of numerous streams, waterfalls, beautiful views of Nyamjanchu rivers, traditional Monpa people. The Chinese had entered into India during the Indo-China war of 1962 through this small town.

It takes about 12 hours to reach Tawang from Tezpur. The road strech is bad, but the journey is scenic.
It is a 16-hour car drive from Guwahati to Tawang. It is advisable to break the journey at either Bomdila or Dirang.
